Just as there are certain character traits that are symbolic of certain families, so there should be of the family of God. That primary character trait should be love. Not only are we, as disciples of Christ, commanded to love one another but we are told in 1 John 4 that it is an evidence of true believers. Those who know God will love; those who do not love do not know God. That love will be manifested in our actions as a result of being sincerely present in our hearts. However, we are not commanded to love only those that we like. Rather, we are called upon to love all beleivers including those that we struggle with liking. We need to recall that we love God because He first loved us. God loved us while we were at enmity with Him. When we love one another, we give the greatest reflection of Christ to the world. The church, as a body, is made up of many members. In order for the body of Christ to grow biblically it needs to recognize the biblical goal set for it: "till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect (teleion) man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness (plaeromatos) of Christ." This goal can only be reached by each member of the body performing his, or her, role. The body is supposed to be "joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love." As we budget our resources, the next two considerations in the appropriation of our finances should be the government and our family needs. Taxation is a hot topic today. Though the Jewish people were looking for the Physical Reign of the Messiah (which will occur during His millennial reign), Jesus told the people that the Kingdom of God was already present. The Scriptures tell us that when an individual accepts Jesus Christ as their savior they become the temple of God. Jesus stated that they (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) would make their home with the believer (John 14:17,23). The evidence of God residing in your heart would be fruit that is consistent with a God-controlled heart. But Jesus stated, "why do you call Me 'Lord, Lord,' and not do the things which I say?" This period of time is referred to as the Millennium, or the Millennial Reign of Christ. Though, the Old Testament Prophets spoke, being moved of the Holy Spirit, much about this period and the Revelation is quite specific and clear regarding the length of this earthly reign of the Messiah, many segments of Christianity refuse to accept a literal understanding. The question must be asked, "Who, or what, should be the final authority for interpretation?" Should it not be God Himself? Additionally, there are many in Christendom who refuse to accept that God has declared that He will once again deal with Israel as His chosen people and nation. The Messiah would come and be cut off 69 weeks, or 483 years, after the decree to rebuild Jerusalem. When the angel came to Zacharias, the time of the birth of Christ became even more apparent. However, still no man would know the day or hour. The same is true regarding the 2nd coming of Christ. No man knows the day or the hour of His return. However, Paul declares that believers should not be surprised by the timing of the return of Christ as the world shall be. We are not of the night, but of the day. We should be aware of the declarations of the Word of God regarding the timing and climate of the return of Jesus Christ. We should be patiently watching and waiting for the return while we are serving Him faitfully. ... First, He told His disciples NOT to worry about the timing that His physical kingdom would be established. As He had told them earlier, no man knows the day or the hour. Secondly, He told them that they would be witnesses of His resurrection after they had been empowered with the presence of the Holy Spirit. After Christ ascended into heaven, the angels made a declaration to the disciples that provides us with a divine testimony regarding the manner of the return of Christ, He would return the same way that He departed. Hence, since Christ had ascended in the clouds, we are told that He will one day descend in the clouds. How we yearn for that day! ... Jesus Christ revealed Himself to well over 500 people after He was resurrected from the dead. In any court of law, that testimony would surely stand. However, when it comes to the resurrection of Christ, many are still skeptical. The Scriptures state as well though that the resurrection of Jesus Christ is a matter of faith. As Jesus stated to Thomas, "... because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed." Faith in the resurrection of Christ is integral to salvation. As Paul stated, "if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved." The resurrection of Jesus Christ did not just deliver from death and the penalty of sin, it delivered us from the power of sin as well. In Christ, we have new life. As such, we face trials, tribulations, temptations and troublesome situations in each phase. We have physical struggles, emotional struggles and spiritual struggles. When Christ became incarnate, He shared in each of these areas of struggles. We are told in the book of Hebrews that He was tempted in every way such as we are, yet without sin. The greek word for tempted is peirazo which refers to a troublesome situation and is translated as temptation or trial, depending upon the context. As Christ went from His Arrest to His Crucifixion, the war against Him intensified. Satan knew that his only hope at this point was to get Jesus to sin; in order that Christ could no longer be the perfect sin sacrifice and propitiation for our sins. Hence, Jesus began to be assaulted with struggles in each area of our human existence. He faced physical struggles being scourged and crucified. He faced emotional struggles being reviled, mocked and scorned by those who were His creation. He faced spiritual struggles as He, who in the eternal Godhead was holy, became sin and was thereby separated from the Father for one eternal moment! Through each of the struggles Christ conquered! At His birth, we read in both the gospels and Revelation 12, there was battle between the forces of God and the forces of Satan. When Satan lost that battle, He sought to destroy the Messiah in order to preempt the plan of God. When that was foiled, his next target became those who were the followers of the Lamb. At the arrest of Christ, we see this war being intensified and addressed by Christ. Jesus said to those who had come to arrest Him, "this is your hour and the power of darkness." Throughout this passage we see the inferiority of the power of darkness and the superiority of the power of light. The power of darkness is limited in time and limited in authority. As well as the spiritual nature of the war, we see the personal nature of the war through the life of Christ and that of Peter. Jesus not only was attacked by His enemies but He was deserted by His disciples. Peter was targeted by Satan, but he was torpedoed by himself. Are you engage in the war? Last week we considered the immediate promises of Christ that He made to His disciples. This week we consider those promises that were imminent. Christ promised that there would be a time in the future for the Reckoning of the World. Christ stated that time would be marked by great physical and spiritual calamity. He also stated that though the world would not believe that it was coming, it was for certain. Secondly, He promised that there would be the Resurrection of the Dead. All people who have evered lived on the face of the earth will be resurrected, some to everlasting life and some to everlasting condemnation. The difference is whether they placed their trust in the sacrifice of Jesus Christ as the payment for their sins. Finally, Jesus promised the Reception of the Saints. There is coming a day when Christ will return in the clouds to receive His saints to Himself. This theologically has been referred to as the Rapture of the Church. ... If we believe that Jesus did not lie and that He always keeps His Word, then those should be important for us to know. Sadly, many have twisted the promises of Christ to say things that He did not say. We can break His promises, and their fulfillments, into two categories: those with immediate fulfillments and those whose fulfillment would be imminent. The promises that would be fulfilled immediately were those regarding the ministry of the Godhead to His followers soon after His death, burial, and resurrection. First, there is the promise of answered prayer. This is not the "name it, claim it" prayers with which many false teachers have deceived their followers. Rather Jesus stated if you ask anything in My name (according to My will), I will do. This is supported by the testimony of John, who in his epistle declared that if ask anything according to the will of God that it would be granted. Again, this is consistent with the Old Testament, where we are told in Psalm 37, where are told that if we delight ourselves in the LORD that He would give us the desires of our heart. The second immediate promise was the giving of the Holy Spirit through Whom we are sealed unto the day of redemption and led into all truth ... Hence, if our desire should be to be Christlike in all our endeavors then it would make sense to consider what the life pattern of Jesus Christ was while He walked on the earth. Interestingly, the Scriptures are very clear regarding this issue. Three times we are told specific items that Jesus was accustomed to doing. It was His custom to attend synagogue. It was His custom to share the Word of God. It was His custom to pray. What does your life pattern look like? Does it match up with that of Jesus? ... Similarly, Christ's secondary passion is consistent with the second greatest commandment, "You should love your neighbor as yourself." Christ's passion for people was revealed in His recognition of, compassion for, and involvement in their needs. Jesus willingly set aside His own needs and desires in order to meet those with whom He came into contact. Having a passion for others is also a command for His followers. The presence, or absence, of that passion in our lives is a commentary regarding our relationship with the Father. Finally, having a passion for others will be a criterion as we stand before the judgment seat of Christ. What are your two greatest passions? On the practical side of this passage we note that this covenant was initiated by God with His chosen servant. Earlier when choosing David YHWH had declared to Samuel, "the LORD does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart." God is the discerner of the heart of man. That could be comforting or convicting. The prophetical consideration of this covenant with David is extremely important. Anyone claiming that they are the Messiah must be able to prove their lineage. They must be able to prove that they are a descendant of David. When the temple was destroyed by the Romans in 70 AD all of the genealogical records were destroyed! In Matthew 1 and Luke 3, the genealogical record of Jesus is established. Both Mary and Joseph are seen to be of the line of David. Jesus IS the Son of David and we await for His return to rule on the Davidic throne during the Millenium. ... During Israel's journey through the wilderness we see many of these types portrayed. One significant type is that of the brazen serpent lifted up in the wilderness, referred to by Jesus Himself in John 3. The children of Israel were guilty of insurrection against God, complaining about God's provision and direction. God sent fiery serpents among them. When the people repented God gave a cure - a bronze serpent attached to a pole. However, the people, when bitten, had to approach the pole by faith believing that they would be cured. In the same light, those who have been bitten by the serpent of sin, that would be everyone, must by faith look to Christ believing that they will be spiritually healed. ... The presenter was to bring a young bull without blemish, lay his hands on the head of the bull confessing his sin, and then kill the bull. The priest was then to sprinkle the blood of the bull seven times on the altar, anoint the horns of the altar with the blood, and then pour the remainder of the blood at the base of the altar. This "Shadow" was fulfilled in the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ on the altar of the cross! The commemoration which we refer to as communion, or the Lord's Supper, actually is an extenuation of the Passover celebration. Jesus, as the firstborn Son, died in our stead; He was the ultimate Passover Lamb. Christ fully fulfilled the Passover type. He was chosen on the 10th day of Nisan, examined for four days, and then slaughtered (crucified) at twilight on the 14th day of Nisan. One of those indicators was the declaration of God to Abraham that He would make him the father of many nations and that in him, and his seed, all of the nations of the world would be blessed. We are told in Galatians 3 that Christ is the Seed of Abraham. Then, those who follow the example of Abraham and trust God by faith are considered the seed of Abraham as well. As Abraham, those who by faith trust Christ as their Savior are to be a blessing to those about them. God called Abraham to leave his home, family and religious heritage to follow Him and serve Him. As they walked together, Jesus "expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself." Indicators of God's plan of redemption had been given throughout the Scriptures. One of the earliest recorded references to what man understood about God's plan is found in the book of Job. Job declared, "For I know that my Redeemer lives, and He shall stand at last on the earth; and after my skin is destroyed, this I know, that in my flesh I shall see God, Whom I shall see for myself, and my eyes shall behold, and not another. How my heart yearns within me!" Job knew that man needed to be redeemed and that redemption would be provided by God incarnate. He also knew that after his body was buried and decayed, he would be resurrected and given a new body! The first coming of Christ was came in the fulness of time both chronologically and typologically.
